This project is a flagship development providing accommodation to young people at risk of custodial remand.

1. The need for this Project?
The Bail Support Project is a flagship development, funded to provide two bed spaces for young people, both male and female at risk of custodial remand, and have no appropriate accommodation, therefore, preventing young people spending unnecessary time in custody.

2. Why have this Project?
Current research has demonstrated that there is a definite link between the provision of stable supported accommodation and a young person’s chances of offending and re-offending.

3. Who is it funded by?
The Bail Support Project is funded from Leicester City: Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, Supporting People, Youth Offending Service and Leicester YMCA.

4. Who do we work with?
  • Young people aged 16-19 years who have offended.
  • Young people registered with the Youth Offending Service or Leicester City Council Health and Social Care.
  • Young people who may face custodial remand.
  • Young people who have a local contact with the Leicester City area.
5. What do we provide?
Each young person referred to the project will receive;
  • Supported accommodation that is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
  • An individually tailored support package, based on individual need.
  • A named support worker.
  • Bail support, offending support and guidance, facilitation and monitoring of court orders, bail conditions, curfew/tagging requirements, and work that helps the young persons face the consequences of their offending behaviour.
  • Lifeskills, education and training.
  • Access to all YMCA sports and leisure facilities, the theatre and membership to the fitness studio.
  • Regular daytime and evening activities and social trips.
  • A healthy evening meal, prepared on site.
  • On site laundry facilities.
6. Who we can't accept
  1. Young people convicted of a serious violent crime or serious sexual offence.
  2. Young people with serious history of racially aggravated offending.
  3. Young people convicted of Arson with Intent.
  4. Young people whose substance misuse poses a significant risk to others.
  5. Young people whose mental health assessment poses a significant risk to others.

7. The referral system
Referrals will initially be made by the Leicester City Youth Offending Service, Bail Officer whilst at the court. Once suitability to the project has been confirmed, the YMCA Bail Worker will visit the young person and present to the court the guarantee of accommodation and bail support package. The court will then decide whether to place the young person at the YMCA with the proposed bail package. Young people can also self refer in certain circumstances.

8. Where are we?
The project is based at Leicester YMCA Aylestone Centre, approximately 2 miles from the City Centre. The site comprises of five, six bedroomed houses on 17 acres of land. Each house has a shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. On site is a communal area with TV and leisure facilities.

Leicester YMCA is part of an International Christian Movement which aims to foster environments where all people, especially young people can develop as individuals and make a contribution to society within which values are important and can be explored.

This project is supported by Leicester Partnership and Leicester City Council through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
