New Parenting Project
The Leicester YMCA in coordination with YMCA England has launched a new initiative to address the social concerns faced by black and minority ethnic parents. IMAGE, a three year parenting project funded by the Home Office (DFES) is designed to complement the government’s commitment to improving standards in health, education and crime prevention. Through a series of classes and workshops IMAGE will provide black minority ethnic (BME) parents with the appropriate knowledge on how to engage with the educational, healthcare and youth justice system. Leicester YMCA hopes that BME parents will feel empowered to address problems that may occur in these sectors and confident enough to access the services available to them.

Focusing upon the internal dimensions of parenting, the project aims to reverse negative perceptions towards parenting, whilst simultaneously transforming how others perceive BME parents. IMAGE ultimately hopes to instil the importance of BME parents playing a proactive role in their child’s development within the social sector and being able to adeptly handle the way in which their children are treated.

In order that we may fully support BME parents, Leicester YMCA have developed a parenting pack which is aimed to support group leaders to run a 9 week parenting course around the issues of Crime, Education and Health. The pack, which was piloted with six parenting projects nationwide, has been carefully designed to inform parents on how to support their children around the three issues. The final, carefully amended version of the pack will be ready for use in April 2007

IMAGE hosted a Parent Awareness Session in April 2005 to give parents the opportunity to voice their concerns and hear more about the project. The 7-week course was aimed at Mums, Dads and Carers of primary school aged children and above.

Speaking about the new initiative, (Project Worker) Antoinette Belgrave said:

"IMAGE is essentially about reinventing oneself as a parent. A parent’s image is often blighted by the misdemeanours of their children. Judgements are regularly made the basis of the upbringing of that child. This often leads to a feeling of inadequacy and helplessness. IMAGE hopes to create a new lease of confidence for such parents whilst helping them to be part of a culture portraying positive first impressions."
