Young people design American diner at Aylestone

Tuesday, 30th April, 2008
Young people living in supported accommodation have input into the re-design of their newly refurbished communal area, which was officially opened on Tuesday 29th April. Leicester YMCA’s Aylestone Centre launched the American diner style cafeteria alongside their new education programme for residents, most of whom have previously experienced homelessness. The new education programme works on the idea of a passport to prepare young people for training, employment and living skills with classes such as numeracy and literacy, first aid, CV writing, vocational experience and qualifications. Former learners Ross Lowdnes, 19, and Lauren Matthews, 18, achieved their ASDAN Level 1 and Reece Thomas won an award for best attendance and positive attitude.
The Aylestone Centre addresses the support needs of young homeless people from 16 – 25 years old.
