YMCA Learners top e2e Awards

Friday, 7th November, 2008
Two learners from Leicester YMCA Sports Leaders course beat contenders from across the county to win e2e awards last night. The annual awards, hosted by Leicester College on Thursday 6th November recognise the achievements of young people on Entry to Employment (e2e) schemes as well as employers and providers.

Of the four awards going to young people Tekla Jules won the Distance Travelled Award, Leam Scullion won the Skills for Life Award and Daniel Marshall, who studied at the YMCA’s Hinckley Education Project was nominated for the Apprenticeship Award.

Young achievers recognised
Each year Leicester YMCA also presents the Michael John Henry Education Award to young people who have progressed substantially within their education programmes. With the Lord Mayor Manjula Sood and MP Peter Soulslby amongst the guests, four young people received a new computer at a special event, held for Leicester YMCA’s 125th anniversary in October. Alongside e2e award nominees Tekla, Leam and Daniel, Anna Swinford also received the Michael John Henry award.

Michael John Henry was diabetic and in 2001 he died tragically after police took him into custody believing he was drunk, when he had actually become hypoglycaemic. His death left a legacy for Leicester YMCA to support young people who are homeless and disadvantaged. Michael’s mother Robin Spruce and sister Lucy Horncastle presented the awards.
