The Y Theatre was built in 1900 as part of the local YMCA, which it still is today. In our history we’ve weathered some storms, with the theatre itself providing shelter to soldiers coming back from the First World War. We couldn’t have imagined that in 2020 we’d have to close our theatre doors for a very different kind of threat.

You may not be aware that The Y Theatre is part of The Y, a local homeless charity housing 102 young people who have experienced family breakdown, mental health issues or abuse. While the theatre has closed in response to the Coronavirus outbreak, our charity has made a momentous effort to increase the vital support to our residents, as they do not have their families around them.

As a small independent venue without core funding The Y Theatre shares the current challenges of other arts sector organisations, however we are uniquely entwined with the wellbeing of local young people. We’re doing everything we can to make sure this vital part of our organisation is saved for our young people and the Leicester community. We’re delighted to share that in October 2020 we were awarded the cultural recovery fund, which will enable us to present a programme of events in the new year and buffer the losses caused by the pandemic. We still need your help to make sure that this Victorian treasure survives in the long term.

Buy a T-Shirt!

Leicester Merch Aid was set up by Cool As Leicester in an effort to raise funds for local independent businesses and organisations during Covid-19. We’re delighted to be able to bring you your very own Y Theatre t-shirts. 100% of the profits will go towards helping Leicester’s oldest surviving theatre shine bright for our community.
