We took part in the 2019 Big Give Christmas Challenge and we smashed it! – We used all available match funds and received a grand total of £7390. A massive thank you to everyone that supported us in one way or another and to those that donated during the campaign. We’re very proud to have completed the challenge and exceeded our goal.
It should be a reason for celebration, but formerly homeless young people who find a job are facing greater poverty. Low paid work causes benefits to reduce or stop immediately, leaving them in financial difficulty with rent payments and waiting up to a month for their first pay.
These pressures prevent young people from being able to save for a deposit or basic furnishings for a place of their own and many give up. Young people at The Y have already been through family breakdowns, poor mental health or abuse. They deserve a chance.
This Christmas Challenge will fund rent bursaries for young people living in one of our Move On houses, so that they can work and thrive in Leicester.
“When I started working it felt like I was being punished. I’m trying to work out the balance between not working too much – but working enough. It also really links in with how you feel as a person and with your mental health. You could be panicking about not meeting your rent and electric payments, stuff like that. Having something to fall back on like the bursary means you wouldn’t need to stress out so much.” – LAUREN
Donations from businesses and supporters will be matched up to £3,020 from Champion and Pledge Funds on the Big Give, the UK’s biggest match funding platform. BUT if we don’t reach the £3,020 target some young people will lose out. Donations must be made to The Y via www.thebiggive.org.uk between 3rd – 10th December to qualify.
With your support 8 young people will receive the bursary and additional help that will set them off on the right foot for their working life (not just Christmas!)
